Happy Froggy New Years!
Don't forget today is the Hottest, Coldest, Wettest, Snowy, Rainiest, Icy, Slickest, Sunniest day of the year!
Well, last night I decided that I wanted to start a new pair of socks for New Years. I had been reading a lot about the Weldon's Practical Needlework techniques that Nancy Bush covered in her new book Knitting Vintage Socks. I had also been reading peoples comments about knitting basic sock patterns. Taking the foot circumference and then using that to determine the number of stitches for the gauge for a plain sock. Nothing fancy, shouldn't be brain surgery. I was going to watch a movie marathon after watching the ball drop.
So I sat down and did my math;
CIRCUMFERENCE (rounded up to not have fractions)
5.5 | 6 | 6.5 | 7 | 7.5 | 8 | 8.5 | 9 | 9.5 | 10
G | 5 | 28 | 30 | 32 | 35 | 38 | 40 | 43 | 45 | 48 | 50 |
A | 6 | 33 | 36 | 39 | 42 | 45 | 48 | 51 | 54 | 57 | 60 |
U | 7 | 39 | 42 | 46 | 49 | 53 | 56 | 60 | 63 | 67 | 70 |
G | 8 | 44 | 48 | 52 | 56 | 60 | 64 | 68 | 72 | 76 | 80 |
E | 9 | 50 | 54 | 59 | 63 | 68 | 72 | 77 | 81 | 86 | 90 |
10 | 55 | 60 | 65 | 70 | 75 | 80 | 85 | 90 | 95 | 100 |
CIRCUMFERENCE (rounded to even numbers)
5.5 | 6 | 6.5 | 7 | 7.5 | 8 | 8.5 | 9 | 9.5 | 10
G | 5 | 28 | 30 | 32 | 36 | 38 | 40 | 44 | 46 | 48 | 50 |
A | 6 | 34 | 36 | 40 | 42 | 46 | 48 | 52 | 54 | 58 | 60 |
U | 7 | 40 | 42 | 46 | 50 | 54 | 56 | 60 | 64 | 68 | 70 |
G | 8 | 44 | 48 | 52 | 56 | 60 | 64 | 68 | 72 | 76 | 80 |
E | 9 | 50 | 54 | 59 | 64 | 68 | 72 | 78 | 82 | 86 | 90 |
10 | 56 | 60 | 66 | 70 | 76 | 80 | 86 | 90 | 96 | 100 |
Then I measured my foot = 9 inches
Then I did a swatch of ribbing 1*1 and K in the round 3 inches each and I averaged 7 stitches to an inch in stocking knit and around 7 in ribbing.
Ok, So I cast on 64 stitches, should be perfect. Well I knit, knit, knit, adjusted for a little leg shaping, knit some more, hit 8 inches did a german heel, and knit my gusset. Then I went to bed after several Asian movies. When I got up and looked at it, it was literally huge, like somewhere around 14 stitches to big. Not so much for the top half of the sock, but the bottom half where it went to stocking knit.
HELP, all you wonderful helpful sock knitters what am I doing wrong?????
Well, a froggy new year to one and all. I did wait until after midnight to rip it out since I don't want to spend my new years frogging all my projects. :)
I leave you with Animal Crossing for DS New Years Firework Show.
However you celebrated last night, I hope you have a happy, healthy, and prosperous Year of the Dog!
