| Name: Concentric Preppy Socks for Mia Designer: Carissa Browning Pattern : Concentric Socks Fiber: Unknown Needle: 2.25mm |
If I think back it really has been a long time since I have actually knit a pair of socks. I think I just got really burned out when I was trying to knit a pair of socks a week for the 52 pair sock pack. That was a totally insane goal and I can not believe that I actually got as far as I did. The reality of a project like that is that you don't end up enjoying anything you are working on. It becomes a part time job. When I asked Mia what she wanted for Christmas though, she asked for a new pair of socks. So I wanted to find an unusual pattern, something that would hopefully break the burnout. I think this one may be pushing the edge of unusual though. I really love the concept and they are a super fast knit. But I ended up with a lot of odd gathers along the bias. I am really hoping that with wear it will work itself out. They have been done for awhile, but I just finally boxed them up to send them out to her. Best laid plans of mice and men. |

kitty: concentric "Preppy" socks
![]() |
| Name: Concentric Socks "Concentric Preppy Socks" Designer: Carissa Browning Pattern: Concentric Sock Ravelry Yarn: From the Stash |
MG and I were on a hunt for socks to start over the holiday. So I started a little holiday knitting for Mia, she had requested a new pair of socks for Christmas. I searched through my sock yarn stash to look for a self stripping yarn and found very few that looked like her. So this was the closest in the stash. Not sure what the yarn is, the label has vanished. Concentric Sock Pattern is interesting. I like the concept of allowing stripes on a bias to wrap around the foot. Though the the fit seems a little odd. There are odd loose spots at times around the foot. Bottom line I really thought the pattern was fun and it is my first toe up sock. |

kitty: quest for washcloths for Mia
![]() |
| Pattern: Mia's Star Fish Washcloth Fiber: Katia Lino 100% Needle: US 2 - 2.75mm |
![]() |
Well you know there are times when you shouldn't block. This was once a washcloth, but after blocking it really began to look more like a doily. Oh well, thank goodness with water it will return to its once soft stage. It may not make the best washcloth so I have started another one for her out of an organic cotton. I picked up the yarn during this years summer sale at Knitters Mercantil. Given how hot it has been I thought some more summer sweaters and tops are in order. So I picked up enough of this linen in white to make a tank top or a short sleeve sweater. It is a bit splity, but there swatch that was knit up in the store was extremely soft. So I am excited to see how the top turns out. |

Mia's Christmas Scarf item #: Textured Shawl Recipe |
![]() |
So I am pretty late in getting this to Mia, but with all the nightmare weather and deadlines galore I can finally get to the PO today. So I thought it was safe to post photos of it. It isn't much of a surprise since Mia has known about her Christmas gift even before I left for London. So here are pictures of the finished scarf. And obviously I love the concept of this textured shawl recipe since this is my third version of the shawl. Indigo Hand Spun - Textured Shawl - Habu Textile A-1B Kakishibu Tsumugi Silk |

kitty: fireplace retreats
![]() |
We have broken the record here in Columbus for continuous snowy days, 17 days and counting. I also think that the grumpiness meter is also growing with just about everyone I am talking with on a daily basis. Prime example of people not dealing with cold, gray, snowy days. So I have been trying to take small retreats in front of the fireplace. Lots of cream tea and even some home made cookies to cheer me up. I haven't really been able to knit much since I injured my hand in London. Last night I tried to knit a little on Mia's very late Christmas gift. She already knows about it, but here is a little sneak peak. It will be a well traveled shawl. |

kitty: sock memme
![]() |
First shipment from my Wollmeise Sock club Elemmaciltur posted photos of the colour of yarn on her flickr account - |
| Sock Memme time: |
When did you first learn to knit socks? In January of 2005, I wanted to knit something for my husband. What’s the first sock you ever knit?January 2005, I made a pair of tube socks for M. I really wanted to knit something for M, but all he wanted was a pair of white cotton tube socks so I used a historical pattern from the 1800's. Favorite Sock Pattern? It would have to be Jaywalkers, this has become my generic sock pattern. Favorite needle method? Metal DPN's Favorite sock needles? Knit Picks US #1’s Who do you knit socks for? M, Mia, T, Olga, my mom, and myself How many pairs have you knitted to date? 26 and with 4 on the needles What is on your sock knitting to-do list? What kind of socks do you like to knit- Colorwork?Well, it is on my to do list... But right now it is probably a pipe dream since colour work scares me to death. Cabled? Yes, cables are one of my favorites Lace? Yes and no, sometime I think lace socks are kind of silly if they have to many holes. It seems to defeat the reason for wearing socks. Anklets? I have one pair, but I have never worn them Knee Socks? I knit a pair for Olga, but I doubt that I would knit them for myself. Solid colors? For lace and cables only Bright and crazy? Bright, yes. Crazy, yes. Wild, more the better. Faux Fair Isle (the yarn doing all of the work)? The pair of anklets that I haven't worn are done with the faux fair Isle. I have kind of mixed feelings about the yarn. I have a few other hanks in the stash. I like the concept behind it. How many sock yarn clubs are you currently signed up for? Um... Um... Um.. Only 2 Wollmeise (Yes I won the lottery) and Tour of DC Socks Tag a few sock knitters here: If you are reading, knit socks, and love sock yarn please consider yourself tagged! Or if your name is Mia the sock yarn enabler, you are tagged. |

kitty: as the olympics draw to an end... I leave you with socks for T
![]() |
item #: Vegetarian Socks for T These sock are kind of odd. The yarn is very loosely spun. If you had to rip the yarn, it pretty much was useless afterwards. It came in two little balls and I ended up with about 3 feet extra. I was really terrified I was going to run out. It is interesting that they were made from the waste of the corn industry, just the husk and cobs. I thought they would make great gym socks since they are pretty padded. These socks are off to T (Mia's niece), but they are very special MG helped me with the ribbing on the first one. So they are truly a gift from Knitbuddies. |

| And as the Olympics end, I leave you with synchronized begging. Audrey and Kattie will be sad to see the olympics have end. Because the Taiwanese feast of food is coming to an end as we fixed British tea and fruit crumpets to bring in the thoughts of 2012. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!!!! |
![]() |
| There are many things that I will remember about the Olympics, most of which are not positive. M's post pretty much summed up my feelings. So I will leave it to him to post this time. |

kitty: Musical Toes
![]() |
Item : Musical Toes |
For some reason the colour combination of this yarn kind of reminded me of some of Annie Albers latter works. So for the stitch pattern I searched through old Bauhaus photos and also old stitch pattern books from the 20's and 30's. I found one photo of a vest that Annie Albers husband was wearing that had a similar pattern in a light and dark yarn. |
![]() |
The design is also similar to a weaving pattern that was attributed to the Bauhaus school. So I played around with it until I was able to duplicate the appearance or at least as close as I could. It is also a bonus since it is a ribbed stitch. I had read on a lot of blog sites that people are having problems with this yarn holding the shape during the day. So lets hope the all over ribbed will help. |

kitty: start of a hat kit
![]() |
Terra Bella Spun A couple of days ago, MG sent me a link for Terra Bella Spun fibers. She knew that Rising sun would be calling my name loudly and it did I ordered right away. While I was ordering, I picked up this colour way for Mia for her hat project. I have kind of mixed feelings about the fiber. The colours were a lot of fun and it was super easy to spin except for the black fiber that seemed slightly felted and clumped every time I hit it. So we will see how I feel about the Rising Sun batt that I ordered. The other half is spun through a new technique from PluckyFluff's new book Interwined, but it was to dark last night before I soaked it in hot water. |

kitty: calling all knitters, hats for soldiers
| Knitting for others.... really does feel good. |
![]() |
item: Nina's Hat Sometimes, knitting something for a friend, stranger, or loved one is all you can really do to help. Recently I found out that a dear friends Mom had tested positive for lesions on her brain. I knew there wasn't much that I could do to help Mia or her mother, but I knew that I could send off a hat to keep her head warm right away. I know that we are all busy with the holidays, but if you have some time to knit a hat for the Neurological ward at National Naval Medical Center at Bethesda please let Mia know. Her mom would love to be able to drop off some hats while she is going through Radiation and Chemo to soldiers who are going through a lot during the holidays. A lot of them are alone and without there families. Mia and I got to talking though about the wounded solders at Walter Reed or Bethesda Medical Hospital that were in the ward with her mom when she had surgery. The soldiers that have neurological problems usually end up having there heads shaved so having a small item placed in there hands can make a lot of difference. Just knowing that someone cares and they are not alone. |

kitty: have you thanked your favorite fireman/firewoman today?
![]() |
Today's post is completely unrelated to knitting or crafting, but it is more about the visibility of what we know or don't know about fire safety. Scout's post about what happened in her home last night really should be an eye opener for us all. I remember Fire Prevention Week in elementary school and junior high, but a lot of what I learned is alarmingly out of date. You should really go read Mia's post for National Fire Prevention Week she just posted. I got my replacement batteries at lunch today! But most importantly, don't forget to thank your firewomen and firemen. In most cases they volunteer to help save your life, and there work goes sadly unappreciated by most. Thanks J, Mia and all your sisters/brother for the work you do! |

kitty: the owl delivery made it
![]() |
| item: Harry Potter Socks yarn: Brightdyes - Preston, UK content: 100g 435 metres sock yarn 75%wool 25% polyamide, price: $19.00 time: A couple of days during a Gaming Convention |
I can finally post a photo of these socks since the Owl made a delivery yesterday to Maryland. I missed the Harry Potter Sock swap that was going on this summer so Mia and I made an agreement to knit each other a pair of Harry Potter Socks. The first yarn I ordered for her socks I absolutely hated, but it was in HufflePuff colours, which would be the house I would put Mia in for her loyalty and friendship. I couldn't find another good indie dyed Hufflepuff yarn so I went with Gryffindor. Since Mia had a long conversation with the sorting hat to get into the house of her preference. Though we all know the truth................ I had a lot of problems with the yarn. Knitting on double points probably wasn't the best choice since every time I looked I was getting a new ladder between the needles. I ended up having to move them two stitches every row. The stripes though were incredibly even which I really liked. I still want to knit her a pair of Hufflepuff, but I will need to find
the perfect yarn. |

kitty: belated FO
| Somebody’s boring me … I think it’s me. - Dylan Thomas |
![]() |
I have been really lax about posting this FO. It has been setting in a pile that needs to be photographed for months. For one reason or another I have been too lazy to set up the timer and M has been too lazy to snap a shot. So alas the pile grows. M did manage to help me the other night get a few photos. To bad it was 90 degrees outside and this sweater is made out of super heavy wool. I think it stayed on for 3 minutes. Thanks so much again, Mia for the yarn and pattern. I will look forward to wear it this fall, when I won't pass out from the heat. This was my first Nasua pattern and yarn experience. The patterns are well written and there is a generous amount of yarn specified in the pattern. The yarn was actually bought for a smaller size than I made and I had enough to finish the sweater. Ok I had 4 inches left, but I did finish the sweater. The neck should have been a little higher had I had enough yarn. The pattern also called for the sleeves to be 3 inches wider and 4 inches longer. Which as you can tell would have swallowed me. |

| item #: A-17 1/4.5 GEAR linen My knitting for the week has been in a funk... Well maybe the week has been in a funk. Everything I have tried either has upset me, frustrated me, dealing with cursed yarn, or the realization that there is no way I have enough yarn for a given project idea. Above is the latter; I started a market bag in the Gear Linen. So I wanted to include a photo be fore I ripped of the fabric. |

kitty: so much to show, but so little time!
![]() |
Eye Candy and a Self-Portrait combined! I really thought it was cool how dark it was ahead of the car and how bright it was behind. I couldn't believe the view from inside the car, just felt kind of magical to me. It was a nice sight to see after such a long day. I also realized after tonight, I have three FO's I haven't blogged anything really about, one sweater that is almost done, and a pair of socks that are half way done. I have been such a bad blogger as of late and holding out. Sorry. (hanging my head in shame) So here is a quick FO post of my felted mittens. |
![]() |
The Specs: Felted Mittens There is something really wonderful about knitters. There seems to always be a willingness to share knowledge at a drop of a hat. I brought up to L, in weaving class that I had always wanted to learn to knit mittens. The next class she brought me in some needles, yarn, and a pattern all ready for me to embark on my first pair of felted mittens. Or for that matter felted anything. The week before I had brough her a little sock kit with a copy of the knitty gritty episode about how to knit socks. I am really happy how well they turned out. The pattern was super easy and I knit each one in about an hour each. Who knows, everyone I know may be getting mittens now. Thank you so much L, I really love my new mittens. |

Here is a quick peek at the wonderful box that arrived in the mail today. There are so many goodies in there I don't know what to say other than, Thank you so much Mia. M will be a happy boy tonight. More tomorrow about the treasures inside the box, including those gorgeous socks peeking out. Yes, those are out of Sweet Georgia's treasure yarn in Still Water. They are so pretty you wouldn't believe. And the sock yarn in that bag, wow comes to mind. More tomorrow and hopefully some more FO's. |

Just had to share the amazement that I kept unwrapping... The first photos are from Christmas Morning, Mia sent me a sock book I didn't have and M some Chocolate Coal, pop rocks, and Coal Bubble Gum. We put the bag under the tree until Christmas Morning. I just hadn't had a chance to post the photos of M opening up his coal yet. So what did I get today? 1) A cute little hand knit hat - Mia must have realized that I never
put anything on my head when I go out in the cold. I have no excuses
now since she knit me two wonderful hats. :) Oh and one can not forget the Sock key chain, pig key chain, and a great sweater book............... WOW, is all I can say. Thank you so much Mia for the amazing Christmas Presents.. By the way there is no way M is getting the Altoids. Oh my god... They are so good. I must stop eating them and eat lunch. |
