If some of you haven't guessed I have a knitting book obsession. Or to be more honest a book obsession. No surprising for someone who use to own a used book aggregated site on the internet for 8 years. To be honest if the cover of the book looks interesting I will probably order it it to add it to my collection, old or new. I troll through ebay looking for interesting vintage pattern books and pamphlets to add to the collection. It breaks up the deadline of my normal day. So the discussion came up recently about recommendations for knitting lace stitch books. Here are some of my favorites in no particular order. |

Barbara Abbey's Knitting Lace By Barbara Abbey By popular demand (and lobbying from Sandy Terp), Barbara Abbey s Knitting Lace is back in print. There appears to be another swell of interest in lace knitting; wonderful! This book is one of only two I know of that is dedicated to lace edgings (and the other one has been out of print for many years); 100 of them to be exact; plus some background lace and instructions for doilies. An excellent - and unique - resource, now in hardcover. |

There are 3 stitch books that I don't think I could live without. This is one of them. I simply adore this book and a lot of patterns you don't see in the other books. I actually picked up my copy while I was in China, one of the only 2 knitting books at the bookstore. |

Well, it is definately an early Prince of Knitting Book. The focus is not as put together as some of his latter books. The project scope seems disjoined and odd mix. Some are amazing projects while others are made out of fun fur and you just wonder why. It always makes me smile when you can see his passion for finger knitting. There is a full photo diagram on steps to take for knitting at the end of the book. |

kitty: mesh lace trend on the runway
Earlier in my life I had the great fortune to see a peek at an amazing private lace collection. The collector had spent a life time traveling the world picking up tid bits, scraps, monastery works, fans, you name it if he found it he would pick it up to add to his collection. The original collector passed away when I was in college and he passed it on to someone I regrettable have really lost touch with, one of the great sad nesses of my life. At the time, though I appreciated the collections beauty, I really regret not taking closer notes and making sketches of the different designs that mesmerized me. My feelings of appreciation for his collection has really magnified in the last couple of months as I have begun my course in studying knitted lace. Something that I wish I knew was in his collection. :( Little did the Korean woman stopping at the Tea Zone know would really change my life. The result is that I am trying to acquire as many of the lace resources that I can find. What saddens me is really the lack of publications on the top. One thing that really has been exciting me of late is to see how more couture designers are working lace into their garments. Not that they have progressed to the 16th century Italian ecclesiastical uses or the 17th century court costumes for males and females where elaborate ruffs, collars, cuffs appear in just about every European portrait of the day. But amazing and innovative lace is walking down the runway.
