Ingram Annotation
Embroidered samplers from the V&A's fine collection are used in this lavishly illustrated volume to provide a historical survey of this popular needlework art and a practical guide to the different types of stitches.

Samplers reveals a gallery of some of the most important and beautiful pieces in the V&A and is a unique opportunity to see close-up the fragile objects which cannot remain on permanent display or be seen in strong light. The book is international in scope and covers a wide range of stitch types, providing both practical information and a rich source of inspiration for designers and embroiderers.

If you were going to buy one of these titles, I think this one really has the most bang for the buck. It offers a comprehensive study of samplers through out the time with reference to Egyptian to Modern. It also clearly outlines the common these and motifs found in samplers.

  1. Thank you for this wonderful review of embroidery samplers' books! I had been eyeing some of these titles without being able to make up my mind because of the lack of information and seeing photos of the various spreads really helped. I am especially glad that you reviewed the book with the map on the front cover and that you found it interesting as it's the one I've been wanting to get the most.
I bet your mom will be thrilled with her Valentine's day present.
